First Year Flip
Scrolling TikTok one day, I realized that there were a lot of first year teachers who were crying, quitting, or talking about finding a new career. As a Special Education major who wants to do this long term, it was sad to see all these teachers who were struggling. After doing some research, I found that approximately 40% to 50% of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years. That is because teachers today have lack of support, are underpaid, face overwhelming workloads, and are held to unrealistic expectations, etc. I can’t directly fix all of these problems, but I wanted to create something to help support new…

Overlooked in Plain Sight
Gender bias in the workplace is often discussed through policies and statistics, but many of its most common forms occur in everyday interactions that can easily go unnoticed. While these moments may seem small, their repeated impact can influence workplace culture, confidence, and perceptions of fairness. Many women working in male-dominated environments report experiences of being overlooked, redirected, or assumed less knowledgeable — even when they hold equal or greater expertise. These interactions are frequently dismissed as isolated incidents rather than recognized as patterns. To better understand how common these experiences are, I surveyed individuals about moments when they witnessed or experienced a situation where a woman was overlooked in…

Malnutrition Hidden in Plain Sight
Malnutrition is a persistent societal problem existing in all parts of the world, but most people are unaware of how prevalent it is on college campuses. The true definition of malnourishment is constantly misinterpreted, and too many college students experience malnutrition without ever knowing it. College students often eat enough calories, but rely heavily on meal plans and convenience foods that lack the nutrients required to meet everyday needs. When life gets busy, nutrition often gets overlooked and forgotten about. It then just becomes more about meeting hunger needs than nutritional needs, which can lead to suffering in academic and mental outcomes. To uncover these hidden indications of malnutrition, I…

Engineering is for You: Rewriting Who Belongs
For my Honors Capstone project, I wanted to highlight the gender gap in engineering. Throughout my collegiate career, I have been one of a handful of women in all my engineering classes and I will be the only woman graduating in my major, Computer Engineering, this spring. This experience has shown how such environments can allow sexism and misogyny to persist, emphasizing the need for greater representation and awareness. This project is a downloadable ‘fortune teller,’ commonly played by children all around the world. Simply print and fold along the solid lines, as demonstrated below, and you’ve got an interactive piece that uses a familiar childhood game to spark reflection…

Meet the Drivers Behind the Truck
One of the topics discussed during the HONS-499 class that we were asked to focus on was the concept of Martin Luther King’s Triple Evils, racism, poverty, and militarism. With my field of study, I think focusing on is poverty, more specifically worker exploitation and low wages among truck drivers. A large majority of truck drivers come from families who were also truck drivers or they are forced into the industry because others judge them based on their backgrounds and where they come from. Because of being treated this way, it makes it harder and harder for truck drivers to break the cycle of poverty. Some truck drivers who fall…

Don’t Turn Your Back on Veterans
Too many veterans struggle with mental health, and many don’t get the help they need. Watch this video to hear one veteran’s story and better understand what you can do to help. Here are some statistics that show the scope of the problem: 90% of participants who had survived an event when others had died reported experiencing feelings of guilt. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325578#causes Veterans who served after September 11, 2001 (9/11) also have higher suicide rates than the U.S. population, with rates exacerbated by traumatic brain injuries (TBI). https://www.hsrd.research.va.gov/research/citations/PubBriefs/articles.cfm?RecordID=1225 Cover Photo by Sung Jin Cho on Unsplash
