Social interactions between individuals with varying degrees of connection will influence all involved identities. Therefore, identity is heavily impacted by relationships. This can be demonstrated through strangers, friends, love, adversaries, and family. Within the relationship between strangers, certain characteristics can indicate some types of identity that can provide insight on how to interact. So, in our definition of identity, stereotypes, or lack thereof, can help aid in identifying someone we don’t know as well, and develop a connection with them. Friends and romantic lovers are also very important to relationships. The bond between friends is complex, and has a great impact on identity as a whole. Romantic relationships play a big role too, as they create deeper connections between people than in other aspects. Friends, similar to family, create a bond unlike that of a significant other. It is evident that there is a defined relationship between family and adversaries, and the line between them is often thin. This line is often buried because both family and adversaries can switch sides easily. This constant switching can cause tension, or growth, in relationships which directly affects our identity. This broad and expansive topic with relationships, and the interactions between, are an important aspect of our definition of identity.
