Race – “Freedom” By Beyonce

“Freedom” By Beyonce and Anaylsis written By AJ Collins

“Freedom”, written and performed by music artist Beyonce, captures the idea of how race plays a role in identity as a part of inheritance. The song is about empowerment and breaking the chains society has put on people of color for years. How they had to fight for equality and justice for the wrongful things done to them. This connects to inheritance because as a human your color comes from your genes and that’s not something you can change. It is who you are and your skin color in America will always determine certain things in life but it doesn’t mean you have to give up because you matter to the nation too just as Beyonce’s message is being perceived. Beyonce uses illustration in her song that captures a deep analysis of America. She says “painting white flags blue”. When she says this she is saying how a flag is a significant part of America however a white flag means to surrender. Yet, blue means freedom. So when she said this she was saying that people of color are no longer going to keep giving up, however, they will start taking a stand for their rights. She makes it clear as well that she is going to “break chains all by [herself] / Won’t let [her] freedom rot in hell / Hey! [she] keep running / ‘Cause a winner [doesn’t] quit on themselves”. She is showing that your drive as a person of color in America means something as long as you continue to stand for it and don’t let society put you down. That you can create a new future the rest of the world doesn’t see that you see.
