Intensity Determines the Outcome
Returning from the prior season losing in the regional final, we remembered how hard itstung to lose a game that cost a whole season of hard work and grit. Glenwood soccer has notbeen to state since 2005 and seeing the potential within players it was certain the journey thisyear would be different than last season. Tryouts were held in the middle of August, and whilemost players were returning players who knew the foundations of a strong team, there was stillmuch improvement to be made before they held their heads up high. Practices started to occur six days a week, and the opportunity for another chanceat the state final was slowly…

Thus Always to Murderers
April 14th, 1865. The Confederacy had fallen only a little over a week prior, and celebration was still widespread. Union supporters were ecstatic over the end of the war and the end of the bloodshed. However, an evil plot brewed in the darkness, one that could change the course of history forever. Confederate allies, enraged by the loss of their army, schemed to exact their revenge on the Union stealing their way of life from them. The man who wanted the biggest part in it all? John Wilkes Booth. Booth knew that President Lincoln, the head of the Union, would be watching Our American Cousin at Ford’s theatre tonight. His plan was…

Conflict Never Ends, but Neither does Hope
Stories offer an escape from reality and insight into what the world could be like. Mortals are fragile beings, and they rely on nice resolutions to feel better about themselves and the world around them. However, the story I am about to tell is one with a happy ending forged by tragedy that will inspire others. Some have asked me if this story is true, and I always respond, “you’ll figure it out.” If I were to tell them the truth, where would be the fun in that? Whether these events are true or fake, they must decide that for themselves. What I speak of are events that took place…

Kennedy’s Thirteenth Birthday
From the moment I opened my eyes as a newborn, I’ve had a loving family. This family, while a mix of dogs, humans, and a cat, was no doubt the best I could have asked God to bless upon me. My mom and dad brought me home from the hospital, and I almost instantly was introduced to the rest of my family, my fur family. In the basement of our old, dingy brick house with carpet that could have passed for concrete, my parents brought my new best friends over one by one. The first dog, a lab named Wally, was big, black, and wagging his tail so hard, his whole…

The Sign
Molly sat on the couch with her husband, David, on a Wednesday afternoon. She had just gotten off of work, so it felt nice to be with her husband, relaxing. She decided to watch some TV for a little before she would leave. Earlier that day, her coworkers, Matt, Mike, and Martha asked Molly if she wanted to go to the bowling alley at around 6 that evening. Molly was never the one to turn down an event, although she did enjoy her relaxing time. She just loved spending time with others. Molly is 4’11. However, her height never determined what she could and couldn’t do. She was always one…

The Hydrogenous Hindenburg
Written by Aiden Mably Long before my leave, I traveled all throughout Europe seeing the true wonders of the world. Yet, the time had come when the world felt too small, and I direly needed to spread my wings if I was to truly fly. Aviation had been quite wonderous sounding as I looked to explore even more of the world. Leaving behind so much of what I knew at a young age, I felt as though I was leaving even more behind as I left for the United States. It was a rather pleasant Monday with few clouds in the sky and a cool spring breeze that lightly…

A Light in the Dark: A Tale of Survival in the Panamanian Jungle
Lisanne cut into the runny yolk of her egg and stared at the orange spill onto the plate, imagining what it would feel like to have slept in her own bed last night. Her thoughts are interrupted by the sound of footsteps. She looks up at Kris who is still drying her hair with a gray t-shirt as she walks past the table. Kris shoves the shirt into her suitcase and continues to serve herself fried eggs and sliced plantains that their host family provided for them. The morning was quiet as Kris sat down to join Lisanne, anticipation permeated the room, making the silence go unnoticed. Kris sat down…

See You Space Dog
Two global powers racing against each other to claim sole superiority surely couldn’t lead to any casualties, right? The right to claim the title of global superpower was on the line, with one deciding factor for who won: Who would get a living organism to space first? The Soviet Union or The United States of America; the stakes could not be any higher. Both sides feared the capabilities the other would have if they conquered the stars. A conflict both sides intended to win regardless of what they had to do. The Soviet Union was ahead; they already had a successful satellite placed into orbit called The Sputnik 1. As…
