Rob Peterson’s Tornado Triumph
On February 29th, 2012, tragedy struck the town of Harrisburg, Illinois. An EF4 tornado swept through around 5AM, leaving the town devastated. As a result of the aftermath, “200+ homes and 25 businesses were heavily damaged/destroyed. At least 10 homes or other buildings were leveled” (Narramore). 8 individuals lost their lives that day, and hundreds were injured. It would take years for the town to rebuild what was lost, and the event would be one that Harrisburg residents would never forget. The following describes a reimagining passage of the events that occurred on this heartbreaking day.
It was the morning of February 29th, 2012. The temperature was near record high, and southwest winds blew violently across the town of Harrisburg, Illinois. This weather was unusual for the season, prompting many meteorologists to heavily monitor the area. Surely enough, a storm was on its way, and things didn’t look pretty. What exactly was to come of this storm? The only person who knew was Rob Peterson.
Rob Peterson was a truly unique individual. A time traveler and scientist, he had advantages and powers like no other and wanted to use them for the betterment of society. One prominent goal in his scientific studies and experiments was to create a gadget that was powerful enough to disrupt a tornado. This gadget, in which he called the Atmospheric Disruptor Unit (ADU) was to essentially stop a tornado by manipulating air pressure, wind speed, and temperature. After many months concocting and perfecting the device, Rob concluded that it was ready to be put to use. With his time traveling powers, he was able to transport himself to a place in which a tornado had caused significant damage. That place was Harrisburg, Illinois. The tornado had destroyed the town, killing 8 individuals and leaving several injured. Businesses were leveled, and homes across the town were damaged. Upon seeing the tragedy that struck the town, Rob decided that it was time to initiate something.
Returning to the present time, Rob rushed to Harrisburg. It was the night before the tragedy, and he wanted to let as many people as possible know what was coming. In the chance that the gadget would fail, Rob went door to door, informing the citizens of the town what was to come. Many individuals were skeptical of Rob’s words, especially since he was not previously known by anyone in the town. Yet, Harrisburg was small enough that everyone learned of Rob and his vision within a couple of hours. As Rob urgently warned the community about the bad weather, he also asked them for help, as his efforts alone were not enough to make this device work. Thankfully, the mayor and the Harrisburg police and fire departments agreed to help. By this point, the storm was very soon approaching, and it was time to start taking action.
Time was of the essence. The winds whistled violently, and it started to rain. Rob knew the path that the tornado was going to take, so he urged his crew to set up right where he remembered the tornado beginning. In a field southwest of town, the crew started unloading the materials from Rob’s van. While piecing the device together, the team was startled by a sound similar to a train. This signified that the tornado had formed, and it was quickly approaching. The crew urgently finished putting the gadget together and took cover in a nearby barn. Rob had backed up from the machine, relying on a remote control to work the magic. This was it, the moment that Rob had been waiting for. As the tornado came near the ADU, it shot out retractable arms that disrupted the wind. The machine additionally emitted a regulator in the form of gas that messed with combining the hot and cold temperatures. At the same time, it also released pressure equalizers that weakened the strength. Thankfully, these combining forces worked, gradually causing the tornado to disappear into the night sky.
As the community processed what had just happened, they were filled with nothing but joy and gratitude. What could have been a great tragedy was instantaneously solved with the help of a brave man named Rob Peterson. As the morning progressed, people thanked Rob and apologized for not fully trusting him. The police and fire departments were also thanked for their generous help. Later that day, Rob headed back to his home and was never seen in the town of Harrisburg again. No one knew anything about him, yet even today the community gives all of their thanks to the mysterious man for saving the town from a great deal of devastation.
