Introduction

This is him. (i1)

My goal in this study is to show how dancehall artist Buju Banton uses grammatical constructions and lexical items from Jamaican Creole and Iyaric, or Dread Talk, to protest the racial and economic inequalities in Jamaica and to celebrate his Rastafarian faith. I plan to look at pronominals to see which he favors in which songs.  I'd also like to highlight a few Iyaric constructions that deal directly with agency and owning one's destiny.
