Methods of Design
Materials: Albums and Singles
Throughout this project I will be working with individual songs and albums of Tyler, the Creator, primarily Wolf (2013) due to it's subject matter being heavily related to race and identity. This information will be used in junction with my thesis of how Tyler, the Creator uses his music as a way to express his feelings on socio-economic problems and his identity as an African-American. These lyrics will be my main focus material. They will provide the primary points to my thesis. (Also see Musical Career) As said before my primary focus album is Wolf which I base my graphs in Findings and Discussion: Vocab and Grammar.

Other Materials: Interviews and Books
In this project I will also use written materials such as books, as well as interviews with Tyler himself. Such books will include Carmen Fought's text titled Language and Ethnicity, An Encyclopedia of Swearing by Geoffrey Hughes, and Sociocultural and Historical Contexts of African American English edited by Sonja L. Lanehart. From Carmen Fought's Language and Ethnicity, I reference various uses of grammar used by African American's from Chapter 3 (pg. 45-68) which covers AAVE in great detail. I also used Chapter 8 from Sociocultural and Historical Contexts of African American English, this chapter was written by Denise Troutman of Michigan State University. The chapter covers various examples of how African American women use AAVE; I use Troutman's examples in relation to how Tyler presents his identity.
