Sandoval Letters
One of the most compelling archival sources for understanding immigration in Madison County is the collection of letters sent to Manuel Sandoval, a migrant laborer who came to Edwardsville from Mexico. The letters are handwritten in cursive, in a style of Spanish that is both informal and somewhat dated. As part of the project, Professor Heidy Cuervo’s Advanced Spanish class transcribed and translated some of the letters. The transcriptions have lightly corrected the original text for spelling errors and standardizations.
You can also view the original ten letters at the Madison County Historical Society’s Archival Library.
Summary
Manuel’s brother Miguel is writing to him. He seems upset about Manuel leaving him in Mexico (San Fernando, Tamaulipaz) for Illinois. There is also possibly a job offer or opportunity to move to the U.S. for Miguel, and he seems to have been working with someone there to pursue that. He laments about how much he misses his brother and how he is not good at writing, but that is the only way they can communicate with him so far away. He does not want to loose touch with his brother. The communication on both ends seems to be slow, as does the process that Miguel is going through to attain some sort of permission, but in the letter it seems things are going into motion.

Summary
Juana starts out this letter to her son thanking him for the money he has sent to her and the family and she wishes god’s protection upon her son. She says that she is doing bad which could refer to sickness but she continues that she is either lost from her son or her son is lost to her, it is difficult for me to decipher which, and she asks her son to pray to god for her to get better. Juana also tells him that Enrique has not heard from him and from the context of the letter is insinuating that he should write to him. The letter ends with her saying that her and the family would rather see him than write to him.

Summary
This letter is written by Pablo Sandoval dated May 14th 1928 in Morelia, Mexico. Pablo is writing to his brother Manuel who lives in Edwardsville, Illinois. Pablo is writing to his brother to update him because he just had an operation. Pablo had to get a tumor removed in his torso that was a result of him being kicked by a donkey the year prior. He mentioned that he got the operation at his brother in law Jose’s house because his family did not want to take him to the hospital and that Jose’s house was the closest to the doctor. Pablo expressed to his brother that he was not going to stay there until he was fully recovered because there was a lot of work to be done in Morelia. Towards the end of the letter, Pablo wrote that his mom also has an illness, and that his mom sends her greetings.

My dear brother, it is in order to greet you and reply to the kind letter I received dated the 11th, where I see that you are happy.
With what we received gladly, brother, we did not open the answer because it was very bad.
Today the 17th, I had just 10 days lying in bed.
On the 9th day, they brought me from Quimeseo to Morelia on a stretcher as it was a matter of a torso operation.
They wanted to send me to the hospital, but my family did not want to and they brought me to my brother-in-law Jose’s house, who was closest to the doctor that came to do the operation.
My illness was a tumor that came out separately.
But thanks to God, I am better.
I am not going to wait until I am healed to go home.
Also, from what you tell me about you coming because brother, there is a lot of work here in Morelia.
What time can God help and put some vintage or not only desires to keep the people.
So much for seed brokers or asona animals that quite a lot of work.
You know how to read and work and you don’t ignore them very well, you had to be there.
No one on the farm, my brother, we don’t know what day God remembers me, my uncle, or my mom.
If you want, we’re looking at each other, look, mom has a spot on her hip.
She knows how sick she will be because she’s been walking around like this for more than a year.
Like me, the tumor that came out was from a kick that a donkey gave me a year ago.
Look, when evil came to be so he knows that God will have to see God with my mom and he receives it as peers.
All of your friends I don’t have you to people in another letter.
Greetings from my mom, it is much better to see you than it is to write to you.
Summary
This dual letter dated from May 30, 1928, is addressed to Manuel Sandoval in Edwardsville, Illinois, from his mother, Juana Gutierres and his brother, Pablo Sandoval from Morelia, Michoacan. Despite the authorship of two different people, the letter itself is written on the same paper, where Pablo’s letter continues immediately after Juana’s signature.
Juana’s letter thanks her son Manuel for his previous letters, and assures him that they were able to receive the ten pesos (Mexican currency)Manuel sent from the United States successfully. Juana also mentions that Manuel’s brother Pablo is in much better health now, and not to worry too much about him. Moreover, Juana expresses her and the family’s longing to see him instead of writing to him.
Pablo also begins his letter in a similar fashion, both greeting and thanking his brother for his previous letters. He confirms that they received the aforementioned 10 pesos that arrived the 17th of presumably May, and were picked up on the 30th due to Pablo’s illness. He then proceeds to inform Manuel about some young women Manuel inquired about in a previous letter, and lists their marital statuses in an attempt to catch Manuel up on the matters of their town. Furthermore, Pablo catches Manuel up on family members that are residing in Morelia with the rest of the family, and others—such as Petra, who have moved into the residence with their own family members. Like Juana, Pablo concludes his letter to his brother Manuel with an indication of longing to see him instead of having to write to him.

H. Matamoros Jam Day 21 of the present of 1929.
Mr. Manuel Sandoval, my very dear brother,
This is in order to greet you in the company of my other brother and his family, who are in excellent health. (My wishes that I give good thanks to God here, because brother, I just indicated it in the previous one, brother, from what you tell me in your letter, brother, my number is 16.)
Because you already know how much I suffer around here with this, that many people have been thrown out and these are very bad conditions. For the same reason that when I arrange my emigration, I will pay them all. God willing, I will write you, or if we are together, then even better. Well, I thank you very much for helping me when I need it. Many greetings to my brother, as much as I gave you.
Your brother who wishes more to see you than to write to you,
E. S. and Miguel Hernández
The shirt and shoes are number seven seven, which is 27, and the pants about 38, but I’m not sure because you can’t imagine how much weight I’ve gained. I’m going to send you my portrait, brother. Tell me that my brother is going to send me a few cents, brother, which I’m waiting for.
Summary
In this letter, Ermenegildo Sandoval dictates to Miguel Hernandez what he wants to write to his brother. It is assumed that he is likely illiterate. On the first page, the two wish health to Miguel Sandoval and his wife before detailing that there have been heavy rains that caused flooding in the area they were living in. Additionally, Ermenegildo had been sick and had used the 5 pesos sent by Miguel Sandoval to pay the doctor. It seems like Ermenegildo Sandoval was caught in a lie when someone recognized him with Miguel, the writer, and was unable to cash the next check that was to be used to help him survive financially. Miguel asks M. Sandoval to remember his mother. The day of the innocents, a holiday celebrated in their area was coming up in a few days and Miguel asks that a rosary is said or some candle be lit for her so that God may embrace her in his kingdom so that she may rest in peace. It closes by saying that E. Sandoval prefers so see his brother rather than writing to him.

The 26 of present
1930 Mr. M. Sandoval
My very esteemed brother the present serves
no more than to greet you and give to give an answer to
you letter and wish that you are well
and in good health in
the company of your wife. Well brother,
after greeting you with the same love as always
I tell you the recentness of what you sent to ask now.
There is a lot of water because it has rained a lot
and there are many changes everywhere.
Brother, tell me and ugly Enrique
how you are. I just received a letter from him
I don’t know how it would have gone the same as Pablo Mireayo.
Well Brother,
I have not yet answered because I was very
sick but thank God I’m already
a little bit better. The 5
pesos you sent me were useful for
paying the doctor that treated me because
the check that you sent me I gave it and by the way
they caught me lying because
they know me from Miguel and you put my name on the
check that I deserved so then many
difficulties to change it is that my name is on it
again
So now I am really desparate because
I am even owing the doctor brother.
I’m also telling you to not forget my mom
The day of the Innocents is coming up
so please pray by your rosary or some candles because I am
very stressed. But I am going to see how I buy
the candles for my mom myself
I sent a message to Enrique not to forget her
so that God will have her in his holy kingdom
and that she enjoys its peace. I’m telling you that your brother prefers
seeing you than writing to you. Look for me, Ermenegildo Sandoval
y Miguel Hernandez
Summary
The topic from the letter is that Miguel Hernandez, went into the army and was communicating with his friend, Manuel Sandoval, that he shouldn’t send any more cards to his original address because he is going to move to Morelia (Mexico) for new job opportunities and to lay low.

With the fact that I don’t have

if you don’t have the money, oh well!

I am leaving in the trucks of the road commision.
There, they are going to do me
