Interest Statement Yasha Schaerer

Artificial intelligence is the topic that stands out to me the most. I’m curious about how deeply technology is woven into our lives, how it helps us but also creates challenges.

One idea I’d like to explore is the contradiction of technology. It’s meant to connect people, yet it often pushes us apart.

I also want to dive into how the internet and AI have shaped the way we go about our daily routines. Technology plays such a huge role in my life, and I think it’s important to understand both its benefits and downsides.

As the semester goes on, I hope to learn more about how people interact with AI and how it continues to change the way we live.

The main topic that caught my eye was the topic of week five “AI imaginaries” I’ve seen about half of the movies listed. Honestly, I’m surprised to not see my favorite artificial intelligence movie listed “ex machina”. This movie is very centered around the ethics, complications and potential humanity for an artificial intelligence. It manages to evoke deep emotional reflection while also maintaining a certain realism with what I can only describe as “near-future scyfy elements”, I believe this would be the perfect addition to week fives’ resources to study. furthermore, I’m interested in the direction this class will approach this topic from, I don’t imagine many people understand this technology, and the unknown trends one of two reactions, curiosity or fear; will the class think “terminator” or just another next gen Alexa.

Interest Statement

As common of a topic it is, AI sounds the most interesting to me. It’s the first manmade thing that has the potential to be fully autonomous, and while that’s scary, it’s also weirdly interesting to me. I look forward to pursuing the idea of how technology is so engrained into our society and how it provides strengths and weaknesses.

I’m interested in further explaining the juxtaposition of technology; how it was created to bring people together, but manages to separate us.

I’m also interested in looking at how the internet and technology has changed how we exist in our day to day lives.

I want to further understand how technology interacts with people in general, it’s such a crucial part of my life so I feel it’s necessary to explain what it does well and what it doesn’t.

One topic that looks the most intriguing to me is where we will write an AI fiction. AI is everywhere in our world, and I think to me this will be a topic will be interesting to write about. It plays a role in some people’s lives. People use it to get answers from it or ideas that they might have not thought of before. I tend to use it for the same reasons. Also, the topic “Early Computing” sounds interesting to me because I’m into computers and learning about computing, so I think going into this topic would help me learn more about computing and technology in general. As the semester goes on, I would like to dive deeper into AI because of how it is now a part of many social media apps and used by a lot of people. I would also like to dive deeper into computing to get more knowledge on it and how it started.

After reviewing the syllabus and getting a feel for the different kinds of assignments we will be doing, I have found what I find sounds the most interesting and engaging for me.

I am really looking forward to our readings on the topic of ethics of representation. I am really looking forward to this because ethics is something that is very important to recognize and understand in any field but especially in a field like digital humanities.

Another topic that stood out to me was digitization. This can really tie into being a history major and digitizing different kinds of documents, but ain’t also sounds interesting because it says we’re going to be doing an activity about digitization and cultural heritage which sounds really interesting.

The final thing that peaked my interest were the weeks when we talk about maps and the weeks we talk about digital storytelling. I’m in school to become a historian so learning about maps is obviously gong to peak my interest, but digital storytelling is probably what I am most excited about. I like digital storytelling and the different elements that go into it because I feel like you can convey a lot of different messages through digital storytelling.

After reviewing the topics in the syllabus, the topics/readings that seems the most intriguing to me are, How Google Perfected The Web, Speech on the Dred Scott decision, How to Lie with Statistics, How to Lie with Maps, and How the Media Covered the Civil Rights Movement. I chose those because of personal interest, out of curiosity, and how some of it is relevant in today’s society. As the semester goes on, I would like to pursue web development and online exhibits. I currently have a website for my makeup business, but its through square site, and I designed it on my own. Although I did not have any initial interest in this course, I can now say I’m interested in designing video games.

I would say from an overview of the syllabus I am most looking forward to the Week 5 analysis of Artificial Intelligence fiction. I am a huge fan of visual media and I can already say confidentially I will be rewatching 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar for the assignment. The concept of an artificial intelligence developing their own thoughts similar to the examples in these two films is both frightening and incredibly interesting to me.

I am also interested in learning more about the start of humanities relationship with technology. Specifically, the focus of the early development of computing from the Week 4 readings. The link included in that week’s lesson involving Google’s “perfecting” the Internet is very interesting just from the title. I am curious if that article would include any thoughts of Google developing too far from what the original website’s intention. One of my least favorite parts of modern technology companies is the reliance on artificial intelligence. I find Google’s A.I. generated responses to be annoying and often incorrect, or contradictory to what I am actually looking for.

In week 14, civic technology sounds quite intriguing to me. One side effect of the internet is having a visceral understanding of the problems of our present. While technology offers an endless list of comforts, entertainment, and benefits, learning how technology can be used for change, even on local levels, is exciting and comforting. The assignment on reviewing AI fiction also sounds interesting and up my alley. Being a fan of all media, viewing different individuals’ imaginations on future technologies is always intriguing. Engaging with cultural conversation with these fictions gives way to our concerns of future technologies. Who will innovate, who will it be innovated for, who will oversee keeping future technology in our best interests. etc. As the semester continues, dipping into topics like how technology can aid developing solutions to problems like wealth inequality, climate change, and others could be interesting. Basically, how can we as a society maximize the productivity of technology rather than simply for the use of comfort and ease.

As a nursing student, I’m particularly drawn to the focus on digital storytelling and the ethical implications of technology in healthcare discussed in HUM 230. The “Medical humanities and health research in the St. Louis region” session resonates deeply, as it connects digital tools to improving patient care and understanding historical health practices. The lab on mapping and spatial analysis with Leaflet intrigues me because it seems like a practical way to explore healthcare disparities geographically, a topic I’m passionate about. This course seems like a fascinating intersection of humanities, technology, and healthcare, and I’m excited to see how these skills can enhance my nursing practice and advocacy efforts.

A few things I am interested in this semester is being able to Practice entry-level digital humanities and social sciences skills including data management, interactive visualization, archiving, and mapping, learning how to use digital tools to address questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, learning the humanities and social sciences can contribute to solving large-scale issues.  This class will be very helpful and useful because I can take the things I learned from CODES in previous semesters and use WordPress and do digitalization while making QR codes and bring some knowledge to this digital humanities class and vice versa. Since I am a PR major, digital humanities ties into the type of work that I will be doing because with digital humanities and Public Relations you have to leverage digital platforms and build trust among yourself and the clients you give your service to.  Data management is really important in PR. You have to be able not only communicate on a surface level but also when your dealing with big firms or working in hospitals you have to record and log information and being able to do that in the most efficient and effective way possible is the goal in PR.
