Authoritarian Government

The Chulym people live in very poor conditions in Siberia. They are not given a voice within the Russian government, so there are not many resources to revitalize their language. When you have an overarching authoritarian government, it makes it quite difficult to mainstream the language and do much to revive this moribund language.

A Glimmer of Hope

During David Harrison and Gregory Anderson's time in Russia. They created an ABC reader with the help of Vasya. This was a result of their positive relationship with the community that lasted after their fieldwork in 2003 to 2008. The ABC reader is to be used in local schools (Anderson and Harrison 2003).
