Our first series of posts were provided by students enrolled in SOC 515, Research Methods &amp; Study Design in Sociology, and focused on where their course readings intersected with their work in The Tiny Children&#8217;s Garden (TTCG). This new series will focus on the story of how TTCG came to be. SSCC is a cross-disciplinary program that supports year-long partnerships between the University and communities in Illinois to advance local resilience and sustainability based on community-identified environmental, social, and economic projects. SSCC\u2019s mission is to connect Illinois communities with the students, faculty, and other resources of the University. Following receipt of the letter, Mayor Thomas requested a meeting with members of the SSCC team to discuss how Washington Park (WP) might partner with SSCC. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While WP and SSCC have not yet found a way to partner, Mayor <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">Thomas kept SSCC\u2019s contact information and shared it with<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW127065480 BCX0\">Derissa<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">\u00a0Davis, WP resident,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.estl189.com\/Avant\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">James Avant Elementary School<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">\u00a0teacher, community leader<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">, and property owner<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\"> when she approached him with her idea to build a community garden for WP children. Davis soon reached out to SSCC\u2019s director Connie Frey Spurlock who is also a sociology professor and su<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\">stainability educator. <\/span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW127065480 BCX0\">Derissa\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\"> initial call came through on Friday, March 31, 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW127065480 BCX0\">Derissa<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127065480 BCX0\"> and Connie immediately decided to partner to build what became known as The Tiny Children&#8217;s Garden. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW127065480 BCX0\" style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Stay tuned for the next installment when you&#8217;ll meet Professors Sandra Weissinger (Sociology) and Anne Werner (Construction Management).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to our first blog post of the 2020 year!
