Timelines

Initial Set-up

Visit the TimelineJS Website and familiarize yourself with the process. Be sure to look at the Women in Computing sample so that you know what you’ll be creating.

Timeline Requirements

  • At least three dates per person in the group.
  • At least one image included per person in the group.
  • At least one video included in the Timeline.

February 4

The goal for today is to create one shared spreadsheet for your timeline with all of the dates and headlines.

  1. Make an instance of the timeline spreadsheet in Google Drive that is shared with the entire group and with Dr. DeSpain. Name your timeline with your group’s issue.
  2. Spend 20 minutes making a research plan. What do you want to know? How are you going to answer your questions? Who is going to do what?
  3. Do some searching on your own and take notes of significant dates, figures, etc.
  4. Come back together to discuss the research you’ve found and how you’ve found it. Make a list of things you might need to know more about or possible things that are missing from your combined record.
  5. Together add all of the dates and “headlines” to the table that you plan to add to the finished project.
  6. Assign each group member at least three dates that they will complete in the Spreadsheet, including “text,” “media,” “media credit,” and all other fields that will help design the timeline.
  7. Assign each group member a copy editing role on at least three of the dates (ones that they weren’t assigned to write).

On Your Own

  1. Complete your portion of the timeline; you can edit the headlines for your timeline items if you’ve come up with a better short description.
  2. Be sure to check your work carefully.

February 6

  1. Come together, discuss your research, and reformat the timeline as you see fit.
  2. Use your time together to proofreading one another’s entries, images, and videos.
  3. Publish the timeline by adding the <iframe> code to the text tab in a blog post. It won’t work if you just use the “Preview” button. You have to click “Publish.
  4. Examine it in WordPress frequently to determine whether or not you are happy with the final result.
  5. Change the height and width pixel amounts in the <iframe> code until you are happy with the size.
  6. Prepare to start class on February 11 by giving us a tour of your timeline.
