  • Gephi Blog

For our network project, we chose the subject of colonization. Within Herland the three men represent the idea of colonization and we wanted to make connections between their ideas of Herland and the examples of colonization within an eighty-four year period. Because the novel was published in 1915, we wanted to keep in that time window to relate it to the mindset of the men in Herland. For our edges, we chose the themes of American Exceptionalism, the idea of White Man’s Burden, Imperialism, Contact Zone, and United Nations. For our nodes, we used the 1830 Indian Removal Act, the installation of the Baptism of Pocahontas painting in the U. S. Capitol…

  • Concept mapping

Who knew this little experiment in mapping literature would take us from a female utopia to a repository from software coding? What seemed relatively simple on the surface quickly became a deluge of browser tabs on the intricacies of StoryMapJS. How hard could it be? There’s a map of Arya’s journey from Game of Thrones. or, in this case, add a marker to the digital copy of a beautifully hand-drawn interpretation of Herland. StoryMapJS is a great tool, and I think would be easily learned, for locating points of interest on the supported existing maps. Using an image is much more involved. And, while it can be learned, the difficulty…

  • Mapping

I enjoyed the mapping a lot more than Gephi, it was more straightforward and easier to work with. For mapping we chose to use Google Mapping, I think we chose that one because of how many examples there were for us to look at. It also helped that some of them were pretty interesting, like; UFO sightings, bigfoot, and pokeman go maps. It allowed us to personalize our own map and use any kind of style that we wanted. I enjoyed being able to pick the icons and the ability to choose where we placed them. We could switch it up and cover a larger area with a box or…

This is less a complete project, and more a proof of concept. I’m providing an iframe and a link. Hopefully, one will be functional.  https://uploads.knightlab.com/storymapjs/7f8a89e77d0a2c19e873f41b9fa127b4/test-map/index.html

  • Timeline

To begin this I just want to let you guys all know how excited I was that I uploaded the timeline on like the first try! It may have been an accident but i’ll take it as a win! Or maybe I’m getting the hang of this whole technology thing a little bit!  I really enjoyed constructing this timeline it allowed me to be a little creative while also keeping it all very organized. I can learn a lot from this type of digital visualization, I am able to clearly see what happened in what year and maybe even a picture or video to go along with it. This makes…

  • Timeline Process

By constructing a digital visualization of context, I feel that you get a better grasp on the information you are trying to present. You are also able to design and layout information in a way that you think best displays what you are trying to get across. In terms of viewing a digital visualization of context, you’re able to take in information on a certain topic without feeling bombarded. While viewing the timelines, you could easily follow each transition and take in the important information that was presented based on what the creator of said timeline thought was relevant. The topic of my groups timeline was “development of the women’s…

  • Timeline Research

I’m fortunate that I enjoy researching topics. Almost like a childhood curiosity about new subjects and ideas. In grade school, whenever we went to the library, I could be found in the reference section with my head nestled in an encyclopedia. With the advent of the internet and Google, research has become more readily available. The problem with blindly searching the internet is making sure the sources are reputable and that you didn’t find yourself travelling down too many rabbit holes. When researching for the timeline, I started by looking at what technologies were available in Herland. Looking broadly, on the surface, there is surprisingly little mentioned for such a utopian…
