• Teamwork makes the dream work…right?

Let’s be honest – group work can either be the most delightful or most agonizing experience. We all have to go through it whether we like it or not; we have all had times where we pray for a project to be individual, but then the professor says the dreaded, “And now I’m going to put you in groups.” I believe the finished product of a collaboration can turn out well if the collaboration itself is not a fair or delightful experience, even if this may not seem necessarily equitable to the one doing all the work. I also believe, however, that a finished product can also turn out badly…

  • A Belated Gephi Blog

Gephi was definitely the most challenging tool I have come across in this class so far. I found it near-impossible to be able to even be able to download it on my laptop, as I ran into several error messages when trying to open it. It falsely told me I did not have the most up-to-date version of Java, and when I could open it (once in every blue moon), it would immediately close the second I clicked on something. When I finally got it to work (shout-out to Bill for using his computer whiz skills on my laptop), I became intimidated by all of the tedious, detail-oriented work it took…

  • The Collaborative Journey…

In every class I’ve taken, when group work or collaboration is mentioned, there is always an audible moan of fear and contempt. I’ve slowly begun to not fear collaborative projects as much. There’s more to learn from working with someone than alone. The benefit of having a partner is huge. If you’re not sure of a concept, or have an idea that may or may not be beneficial, you can always bounce your thoughts off a partner to get their input. A second opinion, hopefully unbiased, can let you know if you’re heading in the right direction. I’ve found group projects easier and more successful when each team member can…

  • Gephi Blog

For our network project, we chose the subject of colonization. Within Herland the three men represent the idea of colonization and we wanted to make connections between their ideas of Herland and the examples of colonization within an eighty-four year period. Because the novel was published in 1915, we wanted to keep in that time window to relate it to the mindset of the men in Herland. For our edges, we chose the themes of American Exceptionalism, the idea of White Man’s Burden, Imperialism, Contact Zone, and United Nations. For our nodes, we used the 1830 Indian Removal Act, the installation of the Baptism of Pocahontas painting in the U. S. Capitol…

  • Concept mapping

Who knew this little experiment in mapping literature would take us from a female utopia to a repository from software coding? What seemed relatively simple on the surface quickly became a deluge of browser tabs on the intricacies of StoryMapJS. How hard could it be? There’s a map of Arya’s journey from Game of Thrones. or, in this case, add a marker to the digital copy of a beautifully hand-drawn interpretation of Herland. StoryMapJS is a great tool, and I think would be easily learned, for locating points of interest on the supported existing maps. Using an image is much more involved. And, while it can be learned, the difficulty…

  • Mapping

I enjoyed the mapping a lot more than Gephi, it was more straightforward and easier to work with. For mapping we chose to use Google Mapping, I think we chose that one because of how many examples there were for us to look at. It also helped that some of them were pretty interesting, like; UFO sightings, bigfoot, and pokeman go maps. It allowed us to personalize our own map and use any kind of style that we wanted. I enjoyed being able to pick the icons and the ability to choose where we placed them. We could switch it up and cover a larger area with a box or…

This is less a complete project, and more a proof of concept. I’m providing an iframe and a link. Hopefully, one will be functional.  https://uploads.knightlab.com/storymapjs/7f8a89e77d0a2c19e873f41b9fa127b4/test-map/index.html
