Timeline
To begin this I just want to let you guys all know how excited I was that I uploaded the timeline on like the first try! It may have been an accident but i’ll take it as a win! Or maybe I’m getting the hang of this whole technology thing a little bit!
I really enjoyed constructing this timeline it allowed me to be a little creative while also keeping it all very organized. I can learn a lot from this type of digital visualization, I am able to clearly see what happened in what year and maybe even a picture or video to go along with it. This makes it a lot easier to read information and make it a little more interactive. It was also pretty easy to navigate it once we understood where the url’s went and exactly how to upload the pictures or videos.
When doing my research I first started with the standard “let me type in my topic in google”— while this gave a lot of information to start me on my way. I needed a little more so I was able to use the standard google search to pick more specific searches. Like the people or locations of where things happened. This made it a lot easier to narrow down what years I thought were the most influential and important overall. But next came the more difficult part, at first I had a picture that was from google, but I needed the copyright authorization so my picture would not work. So then I was instructed by Dr. Despain to look on Wikimedia, here I was able to find a picture and upload it much easier. So the internet was a little tricky finding my pictures and videos but once we figured out the correct URL to upload it was effortless. I didn’t really feel like I had too many problems with my internet searching overall I think it was a good subject and timeline activity!
I really enjoy these types of assignments that are more hands on (computer on?). And you get a nice pretty product at the end! The timeline was a good way to put our topics into the computer. It gave a very neat while also being able to hold and add a good amount of information to it. Overall I really enjoyed the website and creating something from just a little bit of research.

The creative aspect was enjoyable for me as well. And when you got the timeline on the blog I was so impressed. I dealt with making sure that the images I chose could be shared publicly and went to Wikimedia as well. I was really impressed with your determination in class at working towards a solution when we were having difficulties. This was a great learning experience for me.

Imagine your topic is “Doctor Smith from Pennsylvania the specialized in neurosurgery during the Civil War.” Now, you’re sitting in the middle of the Library of Congress. Google is that drunk research partner that runs out and brings every book, article, and media clip containing any of those words, and then conveniently drops the excess of subject material in your lap. Usually, your drunk buddy runs the algorithm properly and puts the most relevant material on top, but it never fails. Somewhere down in the deepest part of the vast pile of detritus is the most relevant piece. Why can’t he just give us that first? I find it quicker to use scholar.google.com or any of the library’s databases. Google makes the process of searching so simple that we forget how to make appropriate searches.

First of all, that gif is exactly how I feel every time I successfully upload something I am unsure about, so I completely know how you feel! I agree that this timeline project was the most visually clear and easiest layout which we have gone about so far. The research process was fun and easy-going, and I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when we figured out how to publish it on the blog.
