Contraband Jackson/Drummer Jackson

Two black and white images of a boy, first labelled "Contraband Jackson, Servant in Confederate Army," and second "Drummer Jackson, 29th U.S.C.T."

This Civil War image shows a little boy immediately after he escaped slavery and then during his time as a drummer for the Union Army. The placement of the images side-by-side dramatize the movement from slavery to freedom. Although the caption says “Contraband Jackson” and “Drummer Jackson,” there is still confusion on his name. Some documents list him as Taylor and Hamilton Taylor.
