While performance expresses a project or a conscious effort to present oneself in social interactions, it also needs validation from its surrounding audience. For this analysis assignment, I choose to use Dylan Sinclair\u2019s song, \u201cAll I Need\u201d as my main source. This idea of identity is heavily set upon receiving other peoples\u2019 approval and validation. Dylan is able to use rhetoric in his song, \u201cAll I Need\u201d by telling a story about a dysfunctional relationship that is on the brink of ending. In the song, he states that an emotionally weak man is yearning for his partner’s love but cannot seem to find it. He dives deeper into the lack of communication in the relationship and admits that he \u201chas an addiction to pleasing [her]\u201d. This is a great example of performance identity because it expresses that the man is still emotionally attached to his partner and is willing to stay in a toxic relationship for her validation. Dylan then ends the song with a question that is never answered, \u201cAll I need to know\u2026are you still with me?\u201d. The weak man in the song understands his relationship with his girlfriend isn\u2019t suited for him. He feels like if he knows the answer to his question everything will be okay when, in reality, it is not the case. So, instead, he masks the situation by denying the relationship to cover up his emotional pain. To sum up, validation is an integral part of the performance as it relates to the concept of identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
