{"id":7,"date":"2021-12-02T20:47:23","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T20:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/identity\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2022-12-05T17:58:26","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T17:58:26","slug":"culture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/identity\/fall-2021\/culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Culture (2021)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Culture is&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our ways of life and our responses to life, through customs in the forms of arts, beliefs, and institutions of an entire society, from generation to generation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The identity of an individual can be reaffirmed or distinguished by these traditions of a larger population.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Negative effects- \u201cAs individuals typically affiliate with more than one cultural group, cultural identity is complex and multifaceted.\u201d Belonging to more than one group can have a negative effect on the person\u2019s identity. Trying to find where you fit in can often leave confusion and the feeling that you belong nowhere. For example, Karim from <em>Buddha of Suburbia. <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/centerforinterculturaldialogue.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/key-concept-cultural-identity.pdf\">https:\/\/centerforinterculturaldialogue.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/key-concept-cultural-identity.pdf<\/a> )&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture is made up of numerous and intersecting concepts of nationality, power systems, government, religion, spirituality, environment, and language.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture explains how we treat our <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/identity\/relationships\/\">relationships<\/a> and informs our <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/identity\/internal-external-perceptions\/\">internal\/external perceptions<\/a>. Culture gives reason to how and why individuals and\/or groups choose to undergo process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Banner&#8221; is a musical composition by Jessie Montgomery written with the goal of providing the theoretical sound of a National Anthem in the world we currently live in. It includes diverse snippets of music from national anthems of various countries and folk songs mixed with Montgomery\u2019s own original ideas, creating the 21st century-styled anthem. &#8220;To Think of Time&#8221; by Walt Whitman<em> <\/em>tries to examine cultural fears of death through the lens of spirituality and describe death\u2019s effect on identity.
