So far, secondary school teachers struggle to gain access to conversations and discoveries based on new scholarship and focused discussions on major African American authors. The trend among literary scholars over the last few decades of producing specialized research projects has diminished the likelihood that scholarship on black authors and literature will become widely available to secondary teachers and their students. To address those challenges, this Institute will offer secondary teachers constructive strategies for understanding the Narrative’s relationship to a network of useful complementary texts, visual culture, and digital resources. The Institute will involve participants in extensive conversations about Douglass and new scholarship on his work that can enrich their approaches to understanding and teaching Douglass’s book and other African American literary texts.

Further Details Coming Soon!

Frederick Douglass and Literary Crossroads Dates: July 7-13, 2019 Location: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Application Deadline: March 1, 2019 Notification Deadline: March 29, 2019 Stipend: $1,300.00 “Frederick Douglass and Literary Crossroads,” exposes secondary school teachers to new developments in African American literary studies, an array of print-based, audio, and visual texts, and digital resources all…

[1

post-1","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
