She was born free in a rural area Maryland and grew up in Baltimore. Murray offered crucial assistance to Douglass for his successful escape from slavery. She later joined Douglass in New York, where the two were married. Garrison was the founder of the anti-slavery newspaper <i>The Liberator<\/i>, founded in 1831. Garrison and Douglass met in 1841, and become friends and collaborators.
