Anna Murray Douglass

Anna Murray Douglass (C. 1813-1882): the first wife of Frederick Douglass. She was born free in a rural area Maryland and grew up in Baltimore. Murray offered crucial assistance to Douglass for his successful escape from slavery. She later joined Douglass in New York, where the two were married. Frederick and Anna Douglass had five children: Rosetta, Lewis, Frederick, Charles, and Annie.
William Lloyd Garrison

William Lloyd Garrison (1805 – 1879): a well-known abolitionist and journalist. Garrison was the founder of the anti-slavery newspaper The Liberator, founded in 1831. Garrison and Douglass met in 1841, and become friends and collaborators. Garrison edited and wrote the preface for Douglass’s first autobiography in 1845.
Baltimore Harbor

Baltimore harbor – The harbor and shipyards appear prominently in Douglass’s autobiographies. From 1835 until 1838 when he escaped, Douglass worked as a caulker (someone who seals seams of boats and ships).
The Frederick Douglass House

The Frederick Douglass House Located in Washington DC, Douglass named the house Cedar Hill and lived there from 1877 – 1888.
