Douglass exposes the religious enslavers as especially heinous and brutal. Reverend Rigby Hopkins, a leading member of the Reformed Methodist religious group, is Douglass’s example of one of the worst of the community of religious slaveholders. Hopkins was reported to boast of his management of enslaved people by brutalizing them even before they committed any action he found deserving of discipline.
