White American abolitionist and founder of anti-slavery newspaper The Liberator. Frederick Douglass traveled to Nantucket, Massachussets in September 1838 to hear Garrison’s speech at the anti-slavery convention. Moved by his articulation and intellect after Douglass spoke to the audience, Garrison recruits Douglass as a fellow abolitionist. Garrison’s working relationship, friendship, and falling out with Douglass is one of the most documented and analyzed of Douglass’s life.
