An enslaved man who was owned by Austin Gore, one of Colonel Edwards Lloyd’s managers. Demby fled from Gore to a nearby stream amid a severe whipping. Gore threatened to shoot Demby if he didn’t emerge from the stream on the count of three and proceeded to shoot when Demby did not appear. Gore was never found legally responsible for the murder of Demby. Douglass’s documentation of the murder bears witness to Demby’s death.
