Bowley’s Wharf

A private wharf built by Daniel Bowley, a merchant integral to the early economic life of Baltimore. Bowley’s wharf was one of many located in what is now referred to as the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. This area was the center of shipping and commerce when Douglass was alive and active in Baltimore, and Douglass refers to Bowley’s Wharf as a point of reference when describing his arrival by ship in Baltimore after leaving Lloyd’s Plantation.
