{"id":576,"date":"2023-05-08T19:47:22","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T19:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/dlcte\/?page_id=576"},"modified":"2023-10-19T15:47:10","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T15:47:10","slug":"roles-within-cte","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/dlcte\/career-and-technical-education\/roles-within-cte\/","title":{"rendered":"Roles within CTE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Workplace Partner\/Supervisor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Who can be workplace partners?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any library or cultural institution with an interest and dedication to helping introduce diverse high school students to librarianship are good candidates for a workplace partner.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any library or cultural institution with committed funds to pay student for an agreed upon length of time&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the responsibilities of serving as one?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide a safe environment in which students can learn about all aspects of librarianship&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide students with training and engaging work that allows them to experience the various roles librarians play in the day-to-day operations of a library&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide students with opportunities to be responsible, engaged, autonomous, and connected&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What work do you have for high school students to do?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students can perform similar duties as other volunteers if the host library has an existing volunteer program.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider including elements of higher level tasks to demonstrate librarianship beyond \u2018page\u2019 duties. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Who can be a mentor?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A workplace supervisor can be a mentor if they feel as if they can successfully manage the dual roles of disciplinarian (when necessary) and mentor&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A person within the library who has an interest in mentorship and diversifying librarianship&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the responsibilities of a mentor?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regularly check in with student regarding their life beyond work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify challenges the student might be facing outside of school and work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work with the student to address areas where the student might be struggling to find success&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As necessary, check in with workplace supervisor to inquire about any areas the student may benefit from additional guidance&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teacher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the responsibilities of the CTE teacher?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify students with interest in librarianship or learning more about libraries&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure workplace partner site meets requirements of the CTE program&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare students for interview process&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet with workplace partner supervisor and student to discuss CTE workplace and classroom expectations&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet with workplace partner supervisor and student throughout the school year (or agreed upon length of employment) to ensure workplace and CTE program expectations are being met&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How are CTE teachers involved in the Program?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CTE teachers often see a different side of a student and can provide insight into the student\u2019s motivations and experiences&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CTE teachers can help the workplace supervisor and\/or mentor when difficulties arise, or disciplinary decisions are required&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High School Student<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing to remember: <strong>T<\/strong><strong>he student participating in the program is NOT a working professional. First and foremost, the student is in the program to LEARN.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the responsibilities of the student?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow the policies and procedures of the workplace site&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attend and engage in curriculum, if part of their workplace site\u2019s program&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remain in good standing in their high school\u2019s CTE program&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate regularly with their supervisor and mentor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Workplace Partner\/Supervisor Who can be workplace partners?&nbsp;
