Career Guides

Students enrolled in CTE programs across the United States will explore career pathways in their curriculum. This information is created by an organization called Advance CTE: State Leaders Connecting Learning to Work, which “is the longest-standing national non-profit that represents State CTE Directors and state leaders responsible for secondary, postsecondary and adult Career Technical Education (CTE) across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.” Advance CTE designed the National Career Clusters® Framework, which includes 16 career clusters and 79 career pathways. Librarians fall under the Education & Training cluster. This information is important to understand for a couple reasons: 1) to understand how students, parents, and teachers are communicating and learning about careers and 2) to think about how to frame and discuss library careers and pathways.

The Illinois State Board of Education provides two guides each year (one for middle school and one for high school) that are based on this framework. Links to the guides are below.
