Culture

Comics are meant to entertain, but they also provide insight into the historical events and popular culture at the time they were created.

The Silver Age of comics produced titles like All-American Men of War and Lois Lane, highlighted representation of characters with diverse backgrounds in Johnny Cloud and Lois Lane, challenged the social norms in the 1950s-1960s, and informed readers about changes in American society. Comic book characters introduced young people to new ideas and significantly influenced how society perceived events during this era.

This collection features the representation of women holding prominent roles, nationalism during WWII and the Cold War, and new cultural concepts being presented through body images and social expectations.

Comic book characters also engaged in the Space Race during the Apollo Program, battled atomic weapons at the height of Cold War tensions and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and served as government propaganda during the public opposition to the Vietnam War.
