Joyce’s Reflection

Prompt: What did you learn about the problem, about the community, about yourself? How will the work you did in CODES relate to your remaining time at SIUE, to the career you are planning for yourself, and to the person you want to be?

Reflecting on my time in the CODES program, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding community issues and the challenges that come with trying to address them meaningfully. One of the most valuable lessons has been recognizing the importance of empathy and truly listening to the perspectives of others. By immersing myself in these community-focused studies, I’ve learned that solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all; they require a nuanced understanding of the unique needs and strengths within a community. Regarding the community, I’ve seen firsthand how impactful it is to bring people together to work toward shared goals. Community members have so much to offer, often bringing knowledge and resilience that can drive real change. I’ve been inspired by the commitment many people have to improving their environment and supporting each other, and I want to foster these kinds of connections as I continue through college and beyond. On a personal level, this experience has helped me grow in patience, adaptability, and self-awareness. I’ve realized how important it is for me to align my actions with my values—especially in the areas of service and authentic communication. This has strengthened my resolve to contribute positively wherever I can, knowing that small acts can lead to significant impacts. Looking forward, the skills and insights I’ve gained from CODES will guide my remaining time at SIUE, shaping how I engage in both my studies and my extracurricular activities. In my career, especially as I move toward applied communication, I want to harness these experiences to foster genuine, impactful connections between people. Above all, this journey has encouraged me to stay rooted in humility and openness, qualities I hope will continue to define me as I pursue a career that not only reflects my ambitions but also my heart for people.
