How-To Guides

Office Hours

Office hours are a chance for you to talk to your professors outside of class. Maybe you have a question about a reading or an assignment, or you want to talk more about something that came up in class. Maybe you’re feeling a bit stressed about the workload. Maybe you just want to chat. Office hours are blocks of time set aside for students, so take advantage of them!

In general, office hours work on a drop-in basis – if your professor isn’t meeting with someone else, you can feel free to knock. Some professors might prefer that you set appointments – if so, they’ll tell you that in class or put it in the syllabus. (The syllabus is always a good place to look for policies!) If you’re not available during your professor’s scheduled office hours, you can also email them to set up an appointment.
