{"id":262,"date":"2020-04-01T18:45:06","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T18:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/biowire\/?p=262"},"modified":"2022-07-01T17:14:44","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T17:14:44","slug":"new-campus-organization-offers-insight-on-data-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/biowire\/2020\/04\/01\/new-campus-organization-offers-insight-on-data-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"New campus organization offers insight on data collection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Logan Kuhns<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Center for Predictive Analytics (C-PAN) is a new, on-campus organization whose aim is to help various school programs, as well as local businesses, turn the data they have collected into action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tC-PAN utilizes state of the art mathematical, statistical, computational, and machine learning tools and techniques to analyze data, produce predictions, and assess the probabilities of future events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cI can hone in on one area of the country and say, \u2018Okay I know at about 5 p.m. there are a number of people getting off work and browse on their computers, so I can target my ads to that group because they are more likely to by our products,\u201d said Carolyn Butts-Wilmsmeyer, Ph.D., director of the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tBesides helping local businesses, C-PAN also hopes to leave its footprint on campus by helping people include analytics in their research as well as by offering various coding classes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\t\u201cWhen you\u2019re first learning how to do something new, it\u2019s a little intimidating. Having somebody sit there and say, \u2018I promise you are not going to break the computer,\u2019 can be reassuring, so you don\u2019t have to go through the headache of wanting to beat your head against the keyboard,\u201d said Butts-Wilmsmeyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\tOne challenge the center will have to face is ethical concerns consumers have involving who has access to their data.
