{"id":253,"date":"2020-02-25T20:24:59","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T20:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/biowire\/?p=253"},"modified":"2022-07-01T17:15:38","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T17:15:38","slug":"city-of-gillespie-receives-grant-for-downtown-renovation-initiative-grow-gillespie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iris.siue.edu\/biowire\/2020\/02\/25\/city-of-gillespie-receives-grant-for-downtown-renovation-initiative-grow-gillespie\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Gillespie receives grant for downtown renovation initiative \u2018Grow Gillespie\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Logan Kuhns<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GILLESPIE,\nIL &#8211; The State of Illinois recently granted the city of Gillespie $1 million to\nrenovate its downtown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillespie\nis being given the money through the bipartisan Rebuild Illinois Infrastructure\nbill that passed in May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nimprovements to Gillespie\u2019s downtown will include adding LED street lighting,\nrelocating overhead utility lines below the street, planting new trees and\nnative plants, planning better traffic control and adding more parking options\nfor patrons of local businesses. The plan also includes adding new benches,\ntrash cans, bike racks and other basic amenities to the streets downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nlarge amount of the vision of the new downtown Gillespie has been put together\nby a group known as \u2018Grow Gillespie.\u2019 Grow Gillespie has been meeting since\n2018 and is made up entirely of volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nGrow Gillespie initiative has been backed by State Senator Andy Manar since the\nstart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAndy\u2019s\nleadership and commitment to the area is unrivaled,\u201d said Dan Fischer of Grow\nGillespie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Manar believes the investment in infrastructure will open up jobs and economic activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI know it will bring new businesses to Gillespie.
